| Dead or Alive |
| So
what is Doa? Dead or alive
is a 3D-beat'em
up by Tecmo. We'll discuss mostly about PSX version here, as it's
pretty
long ago when we saw the arcade last time (actually Scottie even never
saw it ^_^). So, everybody probably knows the flood of the 3D beat'em
ups
for PSX and the fact that most of them are on their best just adequate
quality. Most people know only Tekken 3 (by Namco). Tecmo was unlucky
to
have DoA out the same time as Namco got Tekken 3 out, as even DoA is
above
that average stuff, it doesn't beat Tekken 3. As even Tekken TAG has no
chance against Soul Calibur (also by Namco) which is by the way,
easilly
the best beat'em up on the moment. And Doa2 was released AFTER
it.
Now you wonder the statements, first it's good and then it's not that good? Quite right, it's not AS good as Tekken was but would have deserved much more attention than it had. It's possible nobody took it very seriously because the bouncing breasts and somehow this is quite a paradox; Nobody ever took it very seriously because of that but remember it amongst the other fighting-games just because of that! At least the PSX version bouncing was ridiculous; it was more floating than bouncing....it looked really stupid.*Exploitation motor, ENGAGE* If you want "good" bouncing (whatever that means) then check out Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury (2D beat'em up from SNK).*Exploitation motor disengage* *Ahem* Well anyway, let's move on. The game does have a little more higher exploitation factor than a regular fighting-game, that can't be denied. But thanks to Japanese skill and sense of style, it's not just about that. It's only a little 'enchantment' (yeah we don't have nothing against beautiful, strong women so it's a good thing! ^_^) by the development-team and I can't see why that could be a problem for someone? (As it most likely seem to be...) So if you ever think to spice up your product with a little female-exploitation, then DoA2 are absolutely best source of seeing how it's done with style. (If they would have left out the guys then it would have been a little more suspicious ^_^) More about Doa2 further below, by the way. A
brief note about the game-play as it does
have few things
that we're and actually still are DoA-only features. Everyone knows
that even
a good character-design is not enough to make the game good. Maybe the
most exotic feature is Hold; a button which is an automatic counterwhen
you hit it in the same time when you're being attacked. The effect is
not
as dramatic as in Tekken 3 (where reversals we're mostly take-downs),
as
the counter usually is only one kick/punch. But you can counter a
counter
etc.etc. so you can imagine what the game turns into when both the
players
know what they're doing! It's quite a ballet! Sceptics would say
"That's
all?" Well, mostly....but you would be surprised how it changes the
usual,
default concept of this genre! Too bad they spoiled this a little in
DoA2
as the counter is automatric counter-attack which adds lots to
visuality
BUT inflicts too much damage :( Besides, it's pure HELL playing against
AI as you can guess how good it is timing the hold... |

| Dead or Alive 2 |
| Okay.
At last managed to split this down into it's own
section.
If you don't have played this then I guess you're not interested of the
topic at all, or just decidied to watch instead of messing around :P
Which
is the ultimately worst side in doa2...There's this joke we're always
talking
about when the topic is 3D-fighters: You play Soul Calibur and watch
Doa2..
Hehe, but it's mostly true. Maybe IGN says it's better than Calibur but
hell, we've played calibur easilly over 100 hours and even
the
gorgeous
ladies can't make you sit 100 hours in front of DoA. Close, but no
cigar
^_^
It does have some outrageous features though (umm, did I say boucning? NO ^_^) The best is Kasumi in a pink, skin-tight fullbody with her hair open! Hubba-Hubba.... *Ahem* maybe it's fair to tell that it does have other cool/new features too (like a BLACK skin-tight fullbody! ^__^) but you can check them out from the official Tecmo/DoA2 site or various other unnofficial ones. Well, there's no point in lying, the game itself easilly manages to be the maybe best-looking game overally this far, but it simply cannot match calibur. Kasumi has turned into a buxom-queen in 2 though õ_ó... This smells like the marketing department's work :) DoA1 was new idea, and DoA2 is not actually much more than something DoA1 should have been about gameplay....it's most downside is the moving system, which is so damn sluggish compared to '8-way movement' Soul Calibur utilizes. And all character interaction-videos give a feeling that they end before they should. Final verdict: Good game, Excellent character design, Did we say gorgeous ladies, awesome levels...but could have been still so much better. Waisted potential :( Kinda pisses you off...oh, and you don't have to be an otaku to like this game, but at least that helps to enjoy the spesific part they absolutely didn't leave any gaps in ^_^) |
| DoA Girls |
| Here's a quick glance at the other three girls in DoA and one new (only one? ^_^) of DoA2 . Check out the dungeon's DoA section for more of them as we're not intending to make this a DoA site. But there's always room for few cuties! ^_^ |

Ayane
She's Kasumi's half-sister and also the final boss in DoA. Nice hair, resembles Ivy's of Soul Calibur. She looks more like a bouncer. Okay, she is :) |
600x800 |
Tina
"Hugest" of them all. Probably first AND last time you'll see a woman wrestler who looks that good ^_^ Ooooh seems to be for american taste ;) |
600x800 |
Lei
Fang
More oriental looking girl (that's rare in anime/manga) and it's quite fresh change. Seems to be 0% fat, 25% of silicone and the rest just plain muscle :) ...and she's supposed to bounce? But she's so cute anyway! ^_^ |

Helena
New face in DoA2, if every french opera-singer look like that then we're moving there immediately! Looks a little funny, but we got info from Mr. Bumpy these pics really are official. Called 'cell shading' but semi-cartoonizer-embosser would be closer. Don't let it bother ^_^ |
